Photography

Photography has been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. It started with those cheap-o film cameras in Intermediate school, snapping pictures of my friends and family. A few years later, my Dad bought a polaroid camera and gave me permission to use it. He soon regretted it because I’d use a box of film on pictures close-ups of random stuff around the house. My interest continued through high school and only grew in college. During my years in DC, I became fascinated with capturing city life and the changing seasons (something I never experienced in Hawaii).

After moving back to Hawaii in 2007, I bought my first DSLR and started shooting nightlife events around town. I was particularly interested in the Downetowne parties because, at the time, I felt the lesbian community was underrepresented in terms of photographic coverage. I wanted to document the gay and lesbian community in Hawaii in its element, without the pressure or judgment of mainstream society.

If you look at my main photography blog, Slowdancing with Strangers, I have an emphasis on candids. I like the idea that a candid photo can really capture the mood of a person or event. When I shoot something, my goal is that someone will look at the photos later and say, “it really feels like I was there.” Photography is more than just capturing a moment in time, it’s about encapsulating all the emotion and complexity that are wrapped up in a single memory.

I shoot mainly event photos, but also have experience in commercial work for print and online. If you need someone to  cover your event/gig/party/club/something-that-matters-to-you, I’ll be there.

I am available for hire.  Currently I am based in Los Angeles, California, but can travel anywhere within reasonable driving distance.  I also make pit stops in Hawaii and Seattle several times a year.

I have done work with Midweek, Expression Magazine, Downetowne, Casa, Split Obsession, Gregory House Programs, Hairscapes Hawaii, and others.
