This is the New Year

Another year you made a promise
Another chance to turn it all around
And do not save this for tomorrow
Embrace the past and you can live for now

And I will give the world to you

Speak louder than the words before you
And give them meaning no one else has found
The role we play is so important
We are the voices of the underground

And I would give the world to you

Say everything you’ve always wanted
Be not afraid of who you really are
Cause in the end we have each other
And that’s at least one thing worth living for

And I would give the world to you

A million suns that shine upon me
A million eyes you are the brightest blue
Lets tear the walls down that divide us
And build a statue strong enough for two

I pass it back to you
And I will wait for you,
Cause I would give the world
And I would give the world
And I would give the world to you

This is the new year
A new beginning
You made a promise
You are the brightest
We are the voices

This is the new year
We are the voices
This is the new year

A new beginning
You made a promise
We are the voices
This is the new year
-Ian Axel

Before A Great Big World sang with Christina Aguilera (despite its immense popularity, I don’t care for their version of “Say Something.” I actually prefer the original version with him and bandmate Chad Vaccarino), he was just known as Ian Axel. The songs he released under his own name are pretty much the same as he’s released under his new band name, just a slightly different packaging and now he’s appeared on the Voice. I get it, really I do. Time for a re-branding. Time to change. Time to grow. He took a big risk and it paid off. With a duet with Christina Aguilera on a popular primetime show, not to forget a music video with them both (with Aguilera apparently so sad that she’s “giving up on you” that she has the overwhelming desire to caress herself as she sings, but I digress).

Before Ian Axel’s song “This is the New Year” came out, I made it a point to listen to Death Cab for Cutie’s “The New Year” every New Year’s Day. Now I let Axel remind me this is a new beginning, which then prompts me to make some lofty New Year’s resolutions (like reading a book each month, learning a new word every day, exercising more, cutting out fast food and soda, continuing my Project365, etc.), and then eating a pint of ice cream in my PJs. Yes, I may not fulfill every single resolution I set for myself this year, but that’s beside the point. The point is that this is a new year, a clean slate, and we should allow ourselves to dream big. We should imagine our lives in the new year as something different, something better.

So let’s be dreamers. Let’s be idealists, but also doers. AsĀ Gloria Steinem once wrote, “Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”
